Over The Counter Chemical Peels: Should You Be Using These Peels?

Over the counter chemical peels are affordable and easily available beauty treatments to help people get revitalized skin. These are milder versions of the professional chemical peels – the body treatment technique which promotes skin regeneration. The new skin that replaces the old layers is smoother and gives off that youthful appearance. These do-it-yourself peels may take longer than a professional one to have effects, but the price difference is significant, and with results in as little as a week, they are a viable alternative. They are also easy to use, and can be applied at home, versus having to visit a doctor’s office or spa.

Using Over the Counter Chemical Peels

Over the counter chemical peels are basically light chemical peels that can help people get a more youthful appearance by treating wrinkles and other skin conditions while giving skin a vibrant glow. They use similar but diluted acids as professionally-applied peels. These are still effective though. One of the most commonly used acids is alpha hydroxyl or AHAs, namely glycolic acids.

These naturally-occurring acids (they can be found in sugar cane juice, for example) are the mildest of chemical peeling formulas. A glycolic acid-based peel gently penetrates the upper layers of the skin and aids skin regeneration, or basically sloughing away the dead upper layers of the skin to make way for a younger new layer. Another common acid used is salicylic acid – these peels work well on sebum, and can benefit those suffering from acne greatly.

Of course, reading and understanding the usage instructions of over the counter chemical peels is still very important for you to do. These diluted chemicals are still potent enough to cause damage when used improperly or when overexposure occurs, such as chemical burns that can scar and discolour the skin. These at-home peels also shouldn’t contain more than 10% glycolic acid, as greater concentrations are too harsh.

Ideally, you should try a bit of the chemical peel on an patch of unexposed skin; this way, if there are any adverse reactions, the affected area will not be exposed in public. After proper application of the product, the skin may become sensitive to touch, and possibly red and puffy. These are effects of the chemicals in the peel working, and should not be scratched lest they turn worse. These side effects will fade in a couple of days, revealing a new layer of youthful looking skin where the peel was applied.

Where Can I Get These Peels?

Over the counter chemical peels are a more affordable yet still effective non-surgical means to getting younger-looking, revitalized skin. At around 25 to 40 dollars, they are a far cry from the hundreds or even thousands of dollars that professional peels can cost. Most local drug stores will offer these products, or you can purchase them online. As a cheaper yet still effective beauty treatment, these products should definitely be considered by anyone looking to improve their skin.

Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10

Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10

$65

The creators of the original lunchtime glycolic acid peel are excited to unveil another, chemical peel safe for at-home use – the Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10. This one-step, leave-on daily peel is formulated to exfoliate and deliver potent antioxidant protection for everyday defense against aging. 10% Citric Acid, a well known antioxidant and anti-ager found in citrus fruits, exfoliates and prepares skin for moisturizer absorption and smooth makeup application without downtime. The antioxidant power of Citric Acid neutralizes damaging free radicals brought on by daily environmental exposure to help prevent signs of aging. Easy one-step pad does not require rinsing or neutralizing. Contains 35 pads (including 1 test pad) + peel solution, 1.9 fl oz Exuviance Performance Peel AP25 should be used twice weekly to diminish the existing visible signs of aging, and Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10 should be used on in-between days for daily exfoliation and to help prevent future signs of aging.  Directions: Pour the entire bottle of solution onto the jar of pads before the first use. Discard the bottle. For optimal results, wipe pad over cleansed face every morning. Gently massage in any remaining fluid. Avoid lips and eyes. Follow right away with serum and moisturizer, if desired. Recommended for AM use, but can be used in the PM instead. Daily use of sunscreen or sun avoidance is recommended with use of this Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) product and for one week after, to minimize the risk of sun sensitivity/sunburn. For Sensitive Skin: We suggest using the test peel on a small, inconspicuous part of your face OR on the sides of the nose (nasolabial folds) where stinging is most likely to occur to determine your sensitivity to this product. With all acid peels, a slight tingling or tightness is expected, but if you notice bothersome stinging we recommend using this peel every other day or less frequently, as tolerated. If your skin feels uncomfortable at any time, the peel can be rinsed off. Apply a gentle PHA or bionic cream over it such as Exuviance Ultra Restorative Creme, Exuviance Evening Restorative Cream or Exuviance Multi-Protective Day Creme. For Non-Sensitive Skin: These pads are super-saturated, so after you apply to your face we suggest using the excess on your hands and chest to deliver a daily antioxidant boost to these age-prone areas also. For Retinol / Retin-A Users: For best results, we recommend using Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10 in the morning and your retinol products at night time as tolerated. If your retinol product has SPF in it for daytime use, we suggest using Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10 at night before bed. For Retin-A users, use Exuviance Daily Antioxidant Peel CA10 2 times per week and increase to daily use as tolerated. Ingredients: Jar Ingredients: 35 pads (including 1 test pad) Bottle Solution Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Citric Acid, Arginine, Ammonium Hydroxide, Butylene

The Peel Sessions

The Peel Sessions

$9.99

This is a story of teenage dreams, which, as any Peel fan knows, are hard to beat. Between 1967 and 2004 John Peel picked over 2000 bands to come and record over 4000 sessions to be played on his radio show. Many were young and had never been in a recording studio before, for some it was the start of an illustrious career, for others it was the only recognition their musical talent ever got. For over 35 years the cream of British musical talent made the journey to the BBC’s studio in Maida Vale, from Pink Floyd to Pulp, the Small Faces to the Smiths. And because John Peel was so respected his sessions took on a legendary status ? they were a rite of passage that every new band wanted to go through. Unfettered by commerical pressure the Peel Sessions were a unique British institution – an archive of music that reflects one man’s passion for finding and encouraging new music. Includes a full sessionography listing songs, band members and broadcast dates. Jarvis Cocker writing about his first Peel Session aged 18 (Wayne the drummer was 15): ‘We travelled down to Maida Vale in a van driven by a very strange man we’d contacted via a card pinned to the Virgin record shop noticeboard. We’d had to borrow lots of equipment from a band called The Naughtiest Girl Was a Monitor ’cause we didn’t have enough stuff of our own. The session was to be produced by Dale Griffin, who used to be the drummer in Mott the Hoople; I seem to remember that he was wearing cowboy boots. I think the crisis point came when Wayne was attempting to get a home-made synth-drum to work that a friend of his at school had made out of a rubber burglar-alarm mat and an old electronic calculator – Dale Griffin looked at this 15-year-old kid crouching on the floor bashing what looked like a doormat with some wires coming out of it and just put his head in his hands. But to his credit, the session did get finished and after it, everything else started for me…’

The first three Coctails albums were raw, fun home recordings made in the relative isolation of the band’s Kansas City home. This record, however, was released after the Coctails moved to Chicago and immersed themselves in the local jazz and college rock scene. Perhaps this geographical change accounts for the shift from the frenzied experimentalism of their earlier records to the taut melodicism of Peel. The reeds, clarinets, and vibraphones are gone, replaced with a surprisingly straightforward guitar-based sound. The result is a record of surprising quality, especially for one so wholly different from the band’s previous work. The shift from “novelty” band (distributing dolls of group members and recording a children’s record) to serious college rock poster boys is so complete, it’s hard to imagine they recorded “Jobless” and “Wicked Ways” at all, let alone in the same two-year period. But while this record lacks the carefree, informal vibe of their early material, it does boast some exceptional songwriting as John Upturch, Barry Phillips, and Archer Prewitt all turn in delicious hook-laden gems. The band’s constant swapping of instrumental and vocal duties gives the record a varied, complex feel while saving it from monotony. Thus, the quiet strumming of “Weather King” is placed adjacent to the jangling immediacy of “2000,” and the album’s instrumentals serve as fine palate cleansers between pop songs. A consistent listen from top to bottom, Peel brims with polished talent, making it among the most vital recordings of Chicago’s early-’90s underground scene. ~ Ari Wiznitzer, Rovi Performers: Archer Prewitt – Vocals, Drums, Guitar; Barry Phipps – Bass, Guitar, Drums, Vocals; John Upturch – Saw, Harmonica, Vocals, Guitar; Mark Greenberg – Marimba, Drums, Vocals, Bass

Chemical Assault

Had it been released during the original first wave of thrash, in the pre-internet 1980s, instead of 2006, Violator’s first album, Chemical Assault (out on Brazil’s Kill Again Records), would have probably languished in territorially enforced anonymity. Lucky for them, though, there’s rarely such a thing as a well-kept secret anymore, and so it took only two years before a recently thrash-crazy Earache Records saw fit to reissue Chemical Assault world-wide, rightfully exposing these admittedly archaic, but virtually peerless vintage thrashers to the rest of the globe. And perhaps it is their very isolation and substandard resources that make Violator so special amidst the scores of retro-thrash outfits doing the rounds; by permeating standout head-bangers like “Atomic Nightmare,” “Addicted to Mosh,” and “Ordered to Thrash” with a raw authenticity that’s frequently lacking in the excessively mechanical, often ProTools-enhanced efforts put out by most of their competitors. As a result, these Brazilians have arguably come closer to evoking the true, rough-hewn spirit of Bay Area thrash — their primary influences being Exodus, Vio-Lence, et. al — than many a band located quite a bit closer, geographically speaking. Oh, and Violator’s occasional songwriting references to Slayer (see “Destined to Die”) and Testament (check out “After Nuclear Devastation”) likewise leave little to be desired. At the end of the day, one still needs to give up on the notion of stylistic originality, when retro-thrashers like Violator come a-calling, but if imitation really is the best form of flattery, as they say, then Chemical Assault is as flattering as new millennium retro-thrash gets. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

Burt's Bees Chemical Free Sunscreen SPF-15 3oz

Burt’s Bees Chemical Free Sunscreen SPF-15 3oz

$12.99

Description: Burt’s Bees Chemical Free Sunscreen SPF 15.Burt’s Bees Chemical Free Sunscreen SPF 15 blocks the sun’s harmful rays naturally. This non-greasy formula provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and helps keep skin hydrated without using chemical sunscreen actives like octinoxate and oxybenzone. Instead, titanium dioxide, a naturally-occuring mineral creates a micro-fine barrier on your skin to reflect the sun’s harmful rays. Their natural sunscreen is effective immediately upon application and safe for kids. We all need sunscreen to protect us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. But, did you know most sunscreens contain chemicals that absorb into your body? They believe these chemicals should not be on your skin’s surface, let alone absorbed by it. In chemical sunscreens, there are some chemicals that pose potential human health risks including benzophenone, octinoxate, octylmethoxycinnamate (OMC), and oxybenzone. These chemicals can seep into your skin, potentially altering how your body processes the sun’s rays and could upset your body’s normal hormone balance. That’s why they protect you and your family from harmful UV rays with a non-absorbing natural mineral: titanium dioxide. They use titanium dioxide because it works. It reflects UVA and UVB rays away from your skin, as soon as it’s applied. It forms an immediate physical sun block by creating a translucent broad-spectrum barrier on top of your skin. In contrast, chemical sunscreens need time ? up to 30 minutes ? to absorb into your skin to be effective. What’s more, the chemicals found in most sunscreens are not biodegradable and may have damaging environmental effects in the water. By using natural ingredients instead, they keep both you and the environment safe.Ingredients:Active Ingredient: titanium dioxide (6.83%)Inactive Ingredients: water, cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil, glycerin, stearic acid, lophophyrum elongatum (wheatgrass) extract, oryzopisis miliacea (ricegrass) extract, collinsonia canadensis (stoneroot) extract, glucose, sucrose distearate, sucrose stearate, calendula officinalis flower extract, hydrastis canadensis (golden seal) extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) leaf extract, symphytum officinale (comfrey) extract, xanthan gum, sodium borate, lecithin, silica, acacia senegal gum, alginic acid, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, amyris balsamifera bark oil, copaifera officinalis (balsam copaiba) resin, pogostemon cablin (patchouli) oil, santalum album (sandalwood) oil, guaiacum officinale (guaiacwood) wood oil, aluminum hydroxide, fragrance, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidaseDirections:Apply liberally to exposed areas before going in the sun.
